We start with a brand new OEM Ford 2.3L Ecoboost crankshaft, and machine the snout for a 5mm wide key to locate the timing chain drive gear and damper pulley. The factory relies on a small thin friction washer and the crank bolt torque to keep the crank damper and timing chain from slipping. Once the crank is keyed and our keyed crank gear, there is no possible way for the cam timing to change while the engine is running! After the keyway is machined in the crank we heat treat the crank with the same exact process we use on our Billet crankshafts to increase the toughness of the crank and extend the life under the added stress of an upgraded turbo or nitrous!
No high-rpm or high-horsepower engine should be assembled without a keyed and heat treated crank!
