This Esslinger "Heavy-Duty" timing belt tensioner features 2 roller bearings, a CNC machined steel backing plate, a threaded Stress-Proof shouldered bearing axle, and billet 6061 pulley

When is this product necessary: The 2 piece bearing cover on the OEM tensioner can separate causing the timing belt to fail.  Another problem with the OEM tensioner is the weak rivet used to hold the bearings to the stamped backing plate.  Over time the harmonics generated by the engine fatigue the weak OEM tensioner's rivet, which allows the bearings to shift and that causes the timing belt to ride off and destroy itself!

Hints: The Esslinger "Heavy-Duty" timing belt tensioner does not come with the roll pin for the OEM tensioner spring.  This is done on purpose because we do not recommend using the aged spring.  Instead, use a conventional 10mm hex bolt with a washer This allows more surface area to hold the tensioner tight, and also allows the installer to set the tension correctly.  We recommend setting the timing belt tension so that you can twist the timing belt between 45 and 90 degrees between the cam and intermediate shaft gears.  Tighter than that and you risk burning up the front cam bearing, or bending the bearing axle in the timing belt tensioner.
